"Simply Being"
by Adeife Adeyeye
Softly, gently, I remind myself -
I am allowed to just be.
Not reaching, not proving, not chasing
the next thing.
Just existing in the fullness of who I am.
The sunlight still kisses my skin when I pause.
The wind still dances through my hair when I slow down.
Life still embraces, even when I am still.
There is beauty in being.
And that is enough.
If I could make everyone read these words and just sit with them for a few minutes, I definitely would. THE SECOND LINE ALONE IS POWERFUL: "I am allowed to just be."
I see it in my clients DAILY. It's truly not an exaggeration when I say we NEED TO SLOW DOWN and (as this poem reminds us), just be.
Just be PRESENT.
Just be YOU for a while.
Just be with YOURSELF; YOUR thoughts, YOUR ideas, YOUR emotions, YOUR creativity and imagination.
Just be WITH the people in the room / the people you're with.
I've been asked many times, "What are the benefits of mindfulness and meditation?". JUST BEING is a BIG ONE. The practice of mindfulness and meditation in your daily routines ALLOWS you to practice JUST BEING. Not forcing anything, not striving, not judging, not comparing, not seeking, not working, not worrying... JUST BEING. I'm not in any way saying you "should" meditate or incorporate mindfulness practice in some form into your days (though I'd be happy to chat with you more about it!). I'm just sharing that allowing ourselves to JUST BE, is 100% ONE of those wonderful benefits to our health and wellbeing.
In a world of COMPARISON, CONSTANT DISTRACTION and ALWAYS "BEING ON", this message that the poet sends is a BIG ONE. Hopefully, by sharing it it allowed YOU to JUST BE even just for the time it took to read it.
