Exercises are Exercises

We fall into the "all or nothing" approach with exercise and fitness all too often, in our modern world filled with comparison and information overload. We get the gym membership, we do fancy programs that take up hours in our day/week and sometimes we obsessively tell everyone all about what we did, what we lifted or how far/fast we did it.


Exercises are Exercises.


They are TOOLS that help us TRAIN for whatever we choose to do in life.

That's it for MOST of us - and that REALLY is ok!


I'm a firm believer in this, for the general population (99.57% of you reading this blog 😉). We also have to remember that MOST of us;


-Will not be squatting, deadlifting, bench pressing (or whatever) in a competition...

-Will not be asking our bodies to compete at elite levels of competition...

-Are not training for anything specific outside of health and what we enjoy doing...

-Have no stressful timelines to "perform a certain way, by a certain time" (other than the pressure our own egos create..)


This means we CAN TAKE THE STRESS out of our exercise and look at it from a different view. And we ONLY need to do exercises that will help us DO the things we love doing most, while feeling our best (which includes recovery). It truly doesn't need to go any further or bigger than that!


My exercises for example are tools that allow me to...

-Hike, walk, run and paddle when the opportunities arise

-Stay mobile for the things I love to do and to minimize stiffness and discomfort

-Golf, soccer, hockey, tennis, fly fishing etc on a regular basis and feel good doing them

-Stay mobile for playing with my grandson as he gets older

-Stay mobile, energetic and strong for working around the house, yard and cottage

-Stay energetic and able to go back country camping with friends and family


The list goes on...


My exercises like my kettlebell work, mobility drills, squats, deadlifts, carries etc and how much I lift, how long I did them for this week or how I match up compared to others, is IRRELEVANT to me ... Because they're TOOLS and a means to much more IMPORTANT things in my world. 😀
