Client Story: Simple and Straight Forward Wins EVERY Time

This is not a long story, but this is a simple, straight forward story of awesomeness in my opinion.

My retired client, who does a twice weekly video session with me, tweaked his lower back doing a bit too much one day a few weeks back. After this happened, here's what he did:

  • He booked a massage to see if that would help.

  • The RMT actually recommended he connect with a physiotherapist.

  • He booked his physio assessment.

  • The physio said it will probably be 4-6 weeks before fully back to normal, but with some exercises throughout he'll progressively feel better.

From there, he followed the guidance of his physiotherapist. In addition, he took some of the work we've done over the years and added a few exercises that felt good within his rehab routine each day. He utilized his hot tub as part of his rehab work. He and his wife even were camping for the better part of a week within the first couple weeks with their RV and guess what? He did his physio work while camping. They have a yoga mat in their RV and he went prepared to continue his rehab exercises that don't take alot of time, and certainly will not ruin his trip.

In our recent session he mentioned the physio had progressed his exercises last Friday by adding two more to his routine, however the physio did not send them via email and therefore he wasn't exactly sure on the reps/sets and overall volume.

So what did he do??

He took our years of working together and combined it with how he's feeling, to take action for himself in his rehab and decisions to take action for himself. He added the two exercises in for 10 reps and 2 sets the following day. The next day, his back was a bit stiff from the work. What did he do then? He STILL DID his rehab work, but instead opted to do just body weight for those two new exercises (along with his hot tub that day) for a little bit of "active recovery" type work. By the time I saw him Monday, he was able to do the loaded exercises once again.

This is the simplicity of our health and how straight forward it can be.

1) Hire a professional for guidance.

2) Follow his/her guidance to the best of your ability.

3) Discuss what worked or didn't work for you between visits.

4) Re-assess together with the professional for the adjusted plan.

5) Repeat steps 2-4.

The outcome? My client has progressively felt better, as planned. All because HE CHOSE TO TAKE ACTION and HIS OWN RECOVERY into his OWN HANDS.

We really can create positive change when we take control for ourselves. When we put our best efforts forward (not in intensity, but in consistency).

If all continues to progress as planned, this client will be enjoying his next camping trip in a couple weeks with much less need for physio work, allowing him to enjoy things like biking, hiking and kayaking to an even greater extent again.
