One of my "Redefining Strong" clients shared some awesome updates with me yesterday, and it speaks to three things we talk about often here;
Action, Consistency and Time
We currently run TWO "Redefining Strong" groups each week. These are general strength and mobility sessions for 60yrs+. We move our body, lift weights, laugh and chat throughout the 30min sessions, twice per week.

Our Body is Incredibly Resilient
This client shared with me yesterday that she's noticed how, it no longer seems as tough to "get back into things" if she misses a session or two in a week. We discussed this a little futher, as it's a great observation in her health practices. I'm sure most of us have experienced this feeling before (physically and/or mentally) that if we miss a session, the "OMG, it's like I'm starting over" mindset comes flying into our head. The reality is NO YOU'RE NOT. If humans were that "fragile" none of us would be here today. Our physiology is AMAZINGLY RESILIENT and ADAPTIVE. We DO NOT lose strength that quick. The "feeling" is more neuro-muscular. Our nervous system needs that consistent firing to create neural-pathways to allow our movement to be more efficient. That's all - "It's just nerves" 😂. My client's realization however also speaks to HOW we approach strength and mobility with these sessions;
🏋Easy to fit into your day
🏋Consistent over time
🏋Doesn't TAKE YOUR ENERGY but rather it PROMOTES ENERGY for the rest of your day
🏋SORENESS is NOT a measure of a "good session" in these groups
🏋It's CHALLENGING yet DO-ABLE and ENJOYABLE
Over time, her body has adapted to this consistency and effort. Her body knows the "feeling" of the strength and mobility practice, her mind knows the "expectations" of the practice and these things ease that "I'm starting all over again" feel if/when she does have to miss a session or two. 😃
REAL Benefits of her Efforts
This client is still working out of 5-years of health concerns, unknowns etc. She's taken her last year or two to put the effort back into her health and wellbeing as she builds that health and resiliency back up in her body.
Prior to the health concerns, she shared with me that her husband and her often went golfing with friends. It was a regular thing they all enjoyed. But she hasn't swung a club in 5-years or so. THIS WEEKEND however, her and her husband are heading to one of the local golf simulators to spend some time hitting the ball. 👏 AWESOME!!! Let's break this down...
🏌She's regained her CONFIDENCE and ENERGY to go
🏌She's regained her STRENGTH and MOBILITY to the point where she can go
🏌She's going to rekindle something that she and her husband enjoyed TOGETHER
🏌She's going to enjoy WITHOUT EXPECTATIONS
🏌She's once again moving her body in "NEW" and different ways
She mentioned at one point that she's not sure if she'll be back to golfing regularly and/or with friends yet, to which we both agreed - JUST LET IT BE WHATEVER IT IS GOING TO BE. Enjoy the simulator with your husband. Enjoy hitting the ball again. Time will roll out opportunities as we move forward. But how COOL is this that she's going to have some fun?? 🥰
The DEEP HEALTH Model in ACTION

Ladies and gentleman, this story is the deep health model in action. Plain and simple.
My client's efforts and consistency over time (in her RS sessions with the group, her yoga each week etc...) have developed...
... her PHYSICAL HEALTH (strength, mobility, stability etc...)
... which has strengthened her MENTAL/EMOTIONAL HEALTH (confidence in her body, willingness to try things etc)
... which has added to her SOCIAL HEALTH (meeting new people in our RS group, her yoga classes etc)
*Side note: Her PERSONAL efforts and focus on HER health, is NOW beginning to impact those she loves. Think about it? Golf is something her and her husband enjoyed regularly together. For 5-years as his wife's health struggled, HE also lost the ability to enjoy the game with his wife (for good reason of course). But now, due to her action, consistency and patience with her own health, HE gets those times back as well!! Now HIS social, mental and emotional health have been positively impacted!! (This speaks to how taking time to care for ourself on a regular basis is anything but selfish)
And this is just what's happened so far. The story continues. My point of this example is to show how one action for our health and wellbeing IMPACTS other aspects of our deep health. We are incredibly COMPLEX and CONNECTED. This is a VERY good part about being human and taking care of our own personal wellbeing. It really DOES NOT need to be complicated OR stressful. We just need to take ACTION, find CONSISTENCY and have PATIENCE.
