Speak to Yourself Like a Coach

Dan Harris (former ABC news anchor, author of "10% Happier" and "Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics") said on his podcast when chatting about the "inner critic":


"We don't have to talk to ourselves cheesey or unrealistic,

but rather more like a coach!"

What a powerful statement. How many of YOU reading this right now, speak to yourself...


... like a coach?

... like a friend?

... like how you would treat another human being right in front of you?


I promise the number is VERY VERY low. MOST of us are saying things internally that WE WOULD NEVER say out loud to another human being because it's CRUEL, RUDE, HURTFUL and it would DRAG A PERSON DOWN. Yet our inner voice speaks that way to us DAILY, ALL THE TIME...


... "You idiot"

... "You're such a failure"

... "Why can't you get anything right"

... "Why don't you just $%^&ing give up!?"


Anyone else uncomfortable?? I am just typing those thoughts.


Now add what MOST people WANT in their life; health, happiness, success. Go back and read those phrases again that are common in our minds EVERY.... SINGLE... DAY... ALL .... DAY.


🤔Do ANY of those thoughts/words seem like an efficient way to achieve those three goals in life?


🤔Do ANY of those words conjure up the image of support, compassion and empathy?


🤔Do ANY of those thoughts inside make you think, "Ya, that'll help make things easier"?



An Argument for Mindset Focus


This point is a HUGE argument for CHANGE. The argument is that when our automatic habit is to berate and bully ourselves in ways we would NEVER do to another human we're interacting with, WITHOUT compassion, empathy and/or being realistic with ourselves, we will FOREVER feel like the health we want is beyond our reach. We will CONSTANTLY be "searching" and "failing". It's NOT realistic.


Statistics of health and wellbeing in Canada aren't going UP, they continue to go DOWN. And we keep doing the SAME approach, the SAME mindsets and the SAME #$%^ over and over and over, and then acting confused why we "just can't be healthy".


👉It's because we're trying to "get to the roof of the building without using a ladder"...


👉It's because we keep trying the SAME approach and mindset and expecting different results "this time"....


👉It's because we're saying "I'm at 'A' right now, but I'm going to skip 'B' & 'C' because 'D' is where I want to be..." (often even ignoring the fact that we're at 'A' right now)


👉It's because we're trying to live healthier lifestyles by seeking EXTERNAL information and validation, while our INTERNAL environment is being IGNORED.


HOW we approach our health and health practices starts from INSIDE US.

Habits we create and/or change starts from INSIDE US.

WHAT we choose to do starts from INSIDE US.

HOW we feel about these things comes from INSIDE US.

WHAT we like and dislike, will do and won't do, comes from INSIDE US.


But you will forever have barriers when your internal voice constantly bullies you and while it remains 100% unrealistic.


Healthy lifestyle, habits and practices come from the INSIDE OUT. START to shift to THAT understanding and watch how things flow in the right direction. ☯
