"No Thank You"

I'm such a fan of Kate Solovieva's work and I've shared one of her newsletter writings here before. Well, I have another great one for you!!

The amazing words from Kate's email newsletter... 👇

“One medium coffee with two milk. One medium coffee with two cream. Four timbits.”

That's our standard order for “let's grab a coffee with a little treat”.

Two timbits for me, two timbits for Italian. Sour cream for me, or chocolate, if they don't have sour cream. He gets powdered timbits with jelly inside.

It can be surprisingly difficult to get JUST four timbits.

“Did you want to get a donut instead?”

“No, thank you.”

“Did you want to get a pack of 10? It's actually cheaper.”

“No, thank you.”

I walk away with two coffees and a little paper bag. On the plane, I pull out the bag, and take out the timbits one by one.

There are five.

“I put some extra ones in there for you!”

“...... thank you?”

It's sweet.

Really.

But not helpful.

Over-offering and over-consuming are both deeply normalized within our food culture.

Add to this deep guilt and shame about wasting food that many of us were brought up with, and how can you not eat the extras?

The assumptions are:

“more is better”

“cheaper is better”.

Challenge assumptions.

I often have conversations with clients about EXACTLY the things "Solo" mentions in her newsletter. I think back to the time when my Uncle was working with me and was making some nice changes in his health habits. The one session he mentioned he had a cereal for breakfast (sugary cereal like a Lucky Charms type - I can't remember the kind) and I asked if that was the norm.

ree

His response was; "Your Aunt bought 5 boxes"

My response was; "FIVE? Why?"

His response was; "Because she found them on sale, so she 'had' to buy them"

I've had similar conversations since with clients where we feel this pull to buy something that we may/may not completely want, but "because it's cheap" we use it as a justification to set our health habits aside ... until the sale is over of course. 🫣

In Coach Kate's mention about food waste, that is a SIGNIFICANT factor in many of our adult nutrition habits. We grew up with the "finish your plate" rule and the "don't throw that out! Kids are starving in other countries" mentality. We 100% are ignorant to the IMPACT the YEARS of this mentality towards our eating practices has had on us.

That mentality however first started back during the Great Depression when food was scarce and where MANY folks were suffering. However, the majority of us AREN'T living that way anymore in most countries. We have an ABUNDANCE of food! Using that same approach is not only NOT necessary, it's continuing to HARM us and NEGATIVELY impact HOW we approach our nutrition.

I'll repeat "Solo's" words again for you:

The assumptions are:

“more is better”

“cheaper is better”.

Challenge assumptions.
